"Driving in Italy.... you must be mad!" Well, yes and no.... Italian drivers do have a bit of a reputation for being rude, arrogant and dangerous but if you've ever driven in London it may not feel too different!
As in all European cities you need to ensure that you have an emergency triangle, spare bulbs, and (if you have taken your car from the UK) a GB (or equivalent) sticker, green card for insurance purposes and light correction lenses.
If you plan on driving in Italy then take a photocopy of your full driving license (card & paper parts) to keep with you, and keep the originals somewhere safe. Also, remember that in Italy you drive on the right hand site of the road!
