Holidays in Portugal & The Algarve

Eating our in Portugal and the AlgarveEating Out - Portugal & The Algarve

With such a chequered past it's no surprise that Portuguese cuisine has absorbed a variety of Spanish, Moorish and African influences. From the small local "tasca" (tavern) to larger "restaurante" there's something for everyone.

If you like seafood the try "amêijoas na cataplana" or "arroz de marisco" (spicy seafood rice) which are traditional seafood dishes and are the Portuguese equivalent of paella.

Generally speaking, lunch is eaten between 12.00 and 14.00 hours. Dinner is from about 19.30 to 23.00 hours and it's not unusual for some small cafés to serve a "prato do dia" (dish of the day).

In the tourist areas you will often see restaurants offering "ementa turística," a three-course meal served with a drink, and at a lower price than from the menu. If you don't speak Portuguese then don't panic as it's not uncommon for the menu to be translated into more than one language.

Vegetarians are not particularly well catered for although there are a small number of specialized restaurants in the larger resort areas.

Tipping - When tipping, the Portuguese tend to leave either nothing or 5% as a reward. However, it is generally expected for a foreign tourist to leave 10%.
